ITINERARY
Experience Bhutan’s unique blend of ancient traditions and modern progress as you journey from west to central Bhutan on the legendary Trans Bhutan Trail. Each day brings new insights, from sacred temples and historic dzongs to pristine nature trails and encounters with warm-hearted Bhutanese people. Your active hiking journey through the key cultural centers of Bhutan begins with a flight to Paro, where you’re greeted by stunning mountain views. Dive into Bhutanese culture in the far-western edge of Bhutan—the Haa Valley, recently named one of BBC's top 25 places to visit in 2025.
Next, take the steep cross-country trail back to Paro, home to over 155 temples and monasteries, some dating to the 7th and 8th centuries. The valley carved by the glacial Parochhu River is famous for its fertile fields of red rice, and its religious significance to Himalayan Buddhists.
Trek from Paro to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, which retains its old traditional character despite a fast modernizing core. Home to important government buildings like the monumental Tashichhodzong, ringed by green, forested mountains watered by the quick-flowing Wangchhu River, Thimphu offers citified charms such as museums, art galleries, crafts bazaars, a bustling downtown center, and the magnificent, giant Dordenma Buddha statue that watches over all.
We pick up the ancient trail again at Dochula, the high pass to Punakha, former capital of Bhutan until 1955. Known for rice farming, Punakha is home to Bhutan's longest suspension foot-bridge, part of the Trans Bhutan Trail, and the massive, ship-like Punakha Dzong, considered by many to be the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan.
Driving up the Black Mountain Range, we take the trail again in the high valley of Gangtey, also known as Phobjikha, enjoying the valley's panoramic views on foot before taking sections of the trail to Trongsa, ancestral home of the Bhutanese royal family. We take another optional trek on the ancient route from the high pass of Yotongla, finally descending into the gently rolling Bumthang Valley, the spiritual heart of the kingdom. The region is famous for its unique textiles known as Yathra, locally brewed and fermented beer, Swiss cheese, and hiking trails, all of which we get to know. Finally, hit the Trans Bhutan Trail again to the remote interiors of Bumthang, to the scenic valley of Ogyen Choling, where we stay at an atmospheric old manor and museum, before the short but dramatic mountain flight back to Paro. Your journey ends with a hike to Paro's iconic cliffside monastery, the 'Tiger's Nest,' arguably the holiest site in all Bhutan.
VIEW DAY BY DAY
AUGUST 23: FLIGHT TO PARO FROM BANGKOK/DELHI

Drukair flight KB 131 departs Bangkok at 7:30 AM and arrives in Paro at 11 AM. Drukair flight KB 201 departs New Delhi at 12:30 PM in the afternoon and arrives in Paro at 3:20 PM.
Your Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions Trip Leader and supporting staff will pick you up at the airport and, shortly after your arrival, we take the 2 & 1/2-hour drive to Haa Valley, recently on BBC’s list of top 25 places to visit in 2025.
The drive from Paro to Haa crosses the 3,988-meter (13,116-foot) high Chele La Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable road, where the wildly flapping prayer flags send Buddhist blessings on the wind. The drive offers stunning views of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drakey, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks in clear weather. As you descend into Haa, the road winds through picturesque pine forests with views of distant farmhouses, and isolated mountaintop temples that look like jewels set on a ring of massive mountains. Once on the valley floor, drive past the one-lane market center and its colorful shops, ancient Buddhist stupas and landmarks, to cross a steel bridge that leads into old traditional villages that appear as if from the mists of time.
On arrival at the Soednam Zingkha Heritage Lodge, settle into the beautifully restored 150-year-old former governor’s home in Haatey village. The lodge combines traditional Bhutanese architecture—earthen walls, hand-painted murals, and timber beams—with modern comforts like heated rooms and small en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Its tranquil setting in the Haatey village, amid the time-frozen circle of mountains, enhances its charm. Guests can enjoy authentic local cuisine, featuring the hearty regional buckwheat dumplings or Hoentey, and an opportunity to meditate in the lodge’s atmospheric private Buddhist chapel, an immersive experience.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Haa Zingkha Heritage Lodge

AUGUST 24: HAA PANORAMIC HIKE / EXPLORATION DAY
This morning, after a traditional breakfast at the lodge, we walk the narrow, rock-laid dirt paths of ancient Haatey Village and, crossing a metal suspension bridge, catch the trail that loops around the valley, offering panoramic views of Bhutan’s westernmost district center. The Haa Panoramic Hike weaves through pine forests and exposed ridges with colorful clusters of Buddhist prayer flags left by devout local families.
We stop for a lunchtime visit to the Bhutan Foundation-supported Katsho Eco Camp (the camp is an alternative to the Soednam Zingkha Heritage Lodge and features a trekking campsite setup with nylon tents on wooden platforms fitted with mattresses and sleeping bags—not recommended from August through September). A stay at the camp provides a peaceful retreat amid nature, ideal closer to the winter when the yak herds arrive to graze in the nearby meadows. The Panoramic Trail also passes the serene Jungney Dra temple, perched dramatically on a cliffside, and we take a short detour to visit the sacred site accessed via a steep set of stairs and two large boulders that visitors squeeze through to rid themselves of their bad karma.
We arrive back at the lodge in time for evening aperitifs and, if so inclined, the strong, "hair-on-your-chest" local brew Ara, before a relaxing soak in the lodge's traditional hot-stone baths, complemented by refreshing dips in the nearby glacial stream, a well-favored form of healing and relaxation in Bhutan.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Haa Zingkha Heritage Lodge

AUGUST 25: TRANS BHUTAN TREK TO PARO
The trek from Haa to Paro over the Kaleyla Pass is the westernmost end of the Trans Bhutan Trail, the recently (re)introduced cross-country through-hike along the old ancestral routes of Bhutan. Today's trek requires a good level of physical fitness and ability to negotiate steep trails and quickly winding descents over mixed terrain, including rocky paths and sections that may become muddy during wet weather. The trail covers approximately 17 kilometers (11 miles) and takes around eight hours to complete. The highest point is at the Kaleyla Pass, 3,790 meters (about 12,434 feet), with significant ascents and descents throughout the day. Hiking poles are reccomended today, and on some of the other hiking days. We take regular rest breaks during the steeper sections of the climb for a more enjoyable experience. The trail becomes a wonderland for mushroom enthusiasts in the months from July to September, when the lush vegetation and weather combine to make a variety of edible and inedible mushrooms sprout everywhere in the undergrowth.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Paro Olathang Lodge

AUGUST 26: PARO TEMPLES, MUSEUM, MARKETS
A day of cultural touring in Paro offers rich glimpses into Bhutanese history, art, and spirituality.
Start your day at the National Museum of Bhutan, housed in the 17th-century Taa Dzong watchtower above Rinpung Dzong. The museum showcases over 3,000 artifacts spanning 1,500 years, including thangkas, bronze statues, festival masks, and relics like iron links from the Tamchhog Bridge, believed to have been forged by the 14th century Himalayan mystic known as the "Iron Chain Bridge Builder."
Next, explore the local markets in Paro town to discover traditional handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs. Meet local weavers and stroll the charming and bustling main street with shops filled with Himalayan tchotchkes and treasures sitting side by side.
In the afternoon, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, believed to be one of 108 temples constructed to suppress a metaphorical demon sprawled across the Himalayas. This serene temple is renowned for its ancient orange tree that bears fruit year-round.
Conclude your day at Rinpung Dzong, a fortress-monastery built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. It serves as a religious and administrative center and offers stunning views of the valley. The dzong features intricate woodwork and murals depicting ancient Buddhist teachings.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Paro Olathang Lodge

AUGUST 27: PARO TO TSHALUNA ON THE TBT / THIMPHU, CAPITAL
The Trans Bhutan Trail section from Paro to Tsaluna begins with a steep climb past the scattered apple orchards above Paro, before entering dense forests of pine and fir, and finally ascending to the small, ridge-top Jele Dzong.
The trail spans an estimated 14.2 km (8.8 miles) and typically takes all day to complete because of the steep climb up to the exposed mountain ridge with distant views, in good weather, of the greater Himalayan peaks. It begins in Paro at an elevation of 2,300 meters (7,546 feet) and ends in Tsaluna at about 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). The highest point of the trail is at the Jela Pass, reaching 3,528 meters (11,575 feet).
The Jele dzong, a short distance above the pass, is well worth the visit. It was constructed in the 15th century by Lam Ngawang Choegyal (1464-1540), the brother of the kingdom’s legendary and beloved prankster saint Drukpa Kuenley. The building features a fortress-like structure typical of Bhutanese architecture, and houses a small chapel dedicated to Bhutan’s protective deities. It serves as an active monastic school affiliated with Paro Rinpung Dzong.
From there the trail descends steeply into the Tshaluna Valley through forests of rhododendrons and pine to emerge above scattered village homes, small farms, and a community school at the base, from where we transfer to the capital by car.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Thimphu Capital Hotel

AUGUST 28: CAPITAL MUSEUMS, GALLERIES, MARKETS, BHUTANESE CULINARY EXPERIENCE
A day exploring Thimphu's cultural offerings begins with a visit the Royal Textile Museum to explore the country's rich weaving traditions. The museum houses an impressive collection of royal garments, including crowns and dresses worn by Bhutanese royalty.
Next, head over to the Bhutan Postal Museum, where we learn about the evolution of modern postal services in Bhutan, and admire the country's renowned stamp collection. There, you can also have official postal stamps printed with your picture and mail it off to friends with postcards bought at the museum, a fun, offbeat experience.
Toward lunchtime, visit the Folk Heritage Museum to learn about traditional Bhutanese rural life. The restored three-story building is a traditional farmhouse preserved in its original state from 100 years ago, offering a glimpse of the country's past.
Then we meet a prominent figure whose work raising raising awareness of Bhutanese food heritage, Bhutanese cooking, organic food sourcing, and food processing has received support from the Bhutan Foundation. We enjoy her delicious Bhutanese dishes prepared using local ingredients, learning about Bhutanese culinary traditions and the connection of food and agriculture to the country's cultural heritage. Finally, visit the Voluntary Artists Studio of Thimphu (VAST), the kingdom's premier art gallery, and a haven for art enthusiasts showcasing works by emerging Bhutanese artists. End the day with a relaxed dinner back at the hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Thimphu Capital Hotel

AUGUST 29: GIANT BUDDHA, TEMPLES, MONUMENTS, DZONG
Begin the day with a visit to Changangkha Lhakhang. Perched on a ridge overlooking the valley, this serene monastery offers views of the city below. The peaceful atmosphere is complemented by the sound of prayer wheels spinning and the sight of locals seeking blessings for their newborns. The intricate architecture and sacred relics within the monastery—lit by flickering butterlamps in its incense-scented sanctum—offers a moving experience of Bhutan’s spiritual traditions.
From there, take a scenic uphill hike through lush forests to reach the majestic Buddha Dordenma. The trail is well-forested and has views of the Thimphu valley. At the end of the hike, the towering Buddha statue radiates serenity, and a visit to the temple housed inside the Buddha's seat is a perfect spot to pause and reflect on your day.
Spend the afternoon wandering the busy streets of Thimphu. We explore the Centenary Market filled with local produce, and visit a crafts workshop where skilled silversmiths create the brass, silver and copper carvings that find their way to Bhutan’s Buddhist temples and monasteries. Enjoy an adventurous lunch elbow-to-elbow with local farmers and shoppers enjoying delicious plates of Momos, Bhutanese-style dumplings, at a shop considered by many residents to be the best in the capital.
As evening approaches, take a quiet walk along the banks of the Wang Chhu River, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of Thimphu as dusk settles over the valley. Join capital residents 'taking the air' among the roses, small cafes and weeping willows on the banks of the river. The gentle sounds of flowing water and the evening hour offers a calming end to an enriching day in Bhutan’s capital city.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Thimphu Capital Hotel

AUGUST 30: TBT TREK ON THE DIVINE MADMAN TRAIL
This morning after breakfast, we take the 30-minute drive up to the Dochula pass between Thimphu and Punakha. This steep day trek on the Trans Bhutan Trail takes hikers from the iconic pass between Bhutan’s modern and ancient capitals to the serene mountain top Lungchutse Monastery.
The trail begins at the pass, at an elevation of 3,140 meters (10,301 feet). The famous location marked by the 108 white stupas commissioned by Bhutan's eldest Queen Mother offers stunning views of the Himalayas on clear days. From here, the path ascends gradually through forests of ancient pine hung with picturesque Old Man’s Beard lichen, covering a distance of approximately five kilometers to the small Buddhist temple at the summit. The hike also goest through dense groves of rhododendron, hemlock, and junipers as well as dwarf bamboo. The journey typically takes about 5-6 hours roundtrip, depending on the hiker's pace and fitness. On clear days, you can see Bhutan's highest peaks, including Gangkar Puensum, the world's highest unclimbed mountain at 7,570 meters (24,835 feet). If there's time and energy left in the day afterwards, we'll make another stop by Gakyid (‘Happiness and Peace’) Village where the Bhutan Foundation has collaborated with the Bhutan Youth Development Association to revitalize education and community life. We visit the innovative, local school, and take the optional hike on the Divine Madman section of the Trans Bhutan Trail to Thinleygang Lhakhang, a temple that now serves as a school for young monks, before continuing the short distance down the hill to Mendegang Heritage Home, our home for the night, offering a genuine cultural heritage experience.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Mendegang Heritage Homestay

AUGUST 31: PUNAKHA VALLEY TOUR
After breakfast at the Mendegang Heritage Home, we drive down the winding mountain road to the fertile Lobeysa Valley, known for its particularly delicious strain of red rice.
Our exploration begins at Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Fertility Temple. This 15th-century Buddhist monastery sits atop a round hillock resembling a woman's breast, overlooking the lush Punakha Valley. The temple is dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, the eccentric 15th-century monk known as the "Divine Madman". The 20-minute walk from the roadside to the temple takes us through picturesque rice paddies and mustard fields, offering a scenic glimpse of rural Bhutanese life.
Next, head to the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, perched on a ridge overlooking the Punakha and Wangduephodrang valleys. This relatively new complex serves as a Buddhist college for nuns, housing around 120 residents. The nunnery's architecture is a masterpiece of traditional Bhutanese design. Its main temple houses a 14-foot bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. The complex also includes a meditation center and provides vocational training for the nuns.
Our next stop is the magnificent Punakha Dzong, often considered the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan. Situated at the confluence of the Phochhu (Father) and Mochhu (Mother) rivers, this 17th-century structure served as Bhutan's capital and seat of government until the mid-20th century. The dzong's white walls, adorned with intricate wood carvings and colorful murals in the interior courtyards, contrast beautifully with its golden roofs. Inside are ornate temples and administrative offices. The dzong plays a crucial role in Bhutanese history and continues to be the winter residence of the Central Monastic Body.
We conclude our day with a visit to Bhutan's longest suspension bridge, connecting several villages across the Phochhu River to the main district center. The Punakha Valley, with its lower elevation and warmer climate, offers a stark contrast to the higher, cooler regions of Bhutan. This microclimate allows for the cultivation of crops like rice, banana, and mandarin oranges, making the valley an important agricultural center for the country.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Zhingkham Resort, Dhumra Farmstay or comparable

SEPTEMBER 01: CHORTEN NYINGBO MONASTERY / OPEN AIR ART STUDIO
We begin with a scenic drive to Chorten Nyingbo Monastery, located about 15 kilometers from Punakha town. Founded in the 18th century by Jigme Sengye, this historic monastery is nestled amid lush rice terraces. Meet the young resident monks, visit their classrooms, and learn about their monastic life. The monastery is home to sacred relics associated with Guru Rimpoche, patron saint of the Himalayas.
In the afternoon, stop by the picturesque hilltop called Potolo, the site of an open-air art studio run our old friend Asha Kama Wangdi, one of Bhutan's most celebrated contemporary artists. Known for blending traditional Bhutanese art with modern techniques, Kama Wangdi is also the founder of VAST Bhutan, an initiative nurturing young artists. At his studio, which uses found and discarded objects from the urban areas, displayed works often include works in progress by talented Bhutanese artists, featuring Buddhist iconography with environmental and cultural themes. Learn about Kama’s artistic journey and the evolving art scene in Bhutan, gaining a unique perspective on Bhutanese life through contemporary art.
We end the day at Ama Om's Homestay, where we enjoy an early dinner featuring authentic Bhutanese dishes made from fresh local ingredients. After dinner, unwind with a hot tub session, often infused with medicinal herbs, providing a perfect and therapeutic way to relax after our day of exploration, before returning to the lodge for the night.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Zhingkham Resort, Dhumra Farmstay or comparable

SEPTEMBER 02: DRIVE TO GANGTEY / NATURE TRAIL
The three-hour drive from Punakha to Gangtey takes us on a scenic journey through Bhutan's Black Mountain range. As you leave Punakha, the road follows the Mochhu and Dangchhu rivers, offering beautiful views of the landscape. It climbs through lush mountains covered with trees and vegetation. Just before reaching the Pelela Pass at 3,300 meters (10,826 feet), a small side road branches off, leading to the hidden Gangtey Valley.
Gangtey is a wide, glacial valley at an altitude of about 3,000 meters (9,842 feet), surrounded by rolling hills and mountainslopes where endangered Black-necked Cranes from Tibet migrate for the winter. After lunch we hike on the Gangtey Nature Trail, a local offshoot of the Trans Bhutan Trail. The hike typically takes about 2 to 3 hours, an easy to moderate activity suitable for most fitness levels.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Gangtey Dewachen Lodge or comparable

SEPTEMBER 03: TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL/PELE LA PASS TO CHENDEBJI STUPA
This morning, we take the Trans Bhutan Trail again after crossing Pelela Pass at 3,402 meters (11,161 feet). This pass separates central and western Bhutan, and the trail leads the hiker through central Bhutan's high mountain slopes, dense forests, ancient farms and traditional villages, stopping at Rukubji, approximately 10 kilometers below the pass.
The trail weaves back and forth across the landscape, with the National Highway visible at most times from the trail, until we arrive at the Nepalese-style Chendebji Stupa. The journey concludes at this important landmark, believed to have been built at a point where three ridges meet the 'three edges of the sky.' The entire stretch from Pelela Pass to Chendebji covers approximately 21.5 kilometers (13 miles) and typically takes about 8 hours to complete. We continue to the Tangsibji Village for the evening, to spend the night at a traditional Bhutanese home near a section of the Trans Bhutan Trail. The accommodations will be comparatively modest, and we will try to enhance your sleeping arrangements with our expedition quality sleeping bags and standard-issue trekking mats, or you can choose to drive to the Trongsa Yangkhil Lodge instead for a more comfortable night.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Tangsibji Village or the Trongsa Yangkhil Lodge

SEPTEMBER 04: TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL TO TRONGSA DZONG
This morning, if we've spent the prior night in Tangsibji instead of the Yangkhil Lodge, and provided the village elders are available, we may begin the day with an ancient Bonpo shamanic blessing unique to this part of the country. Later in the morning, we drive to the Trongsa Viewpoint and descend into a steep and densely forested gorge across the massive fortress of Trongsa Dzong. The hike from Trongsa Viewpoint to the Dzong on the Trans Bhutan Trail gives hikers a unique perspective, retracing the steps of Bhutanese royalty and offers striking views of the landscape. The trail winds steeply into the valley below, leading us to the roaring Mangdechhu River, where we cross an old traditional cantilever bridge reconstructed as a faithful copy of the original crossing that was made by generations of Bhutanese ancestors. After crossing the river, the trail climbs back up to the opposite side of the valley, ending at the old western gate of the Trongsa Dzong. This impressive fortress, also known as Choekhor Rabdentse Dzong, is the largest in Bhutan and offers a magnificent example of Bhutanese architecture and history. The trail is approximately four to six kilometers long and takes about two to three hours to complete. This section of the Trans Bhutan Trail is particularly noteworthy for its historical importance.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Trongsa Yangkhil Lodge

SEPTEMBER 05: TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL FROM YOTONGLA PASS TO BUMTHANG
The hike from Yotongla Pass to Gyetsa on the Trans Bhutan Trail begins at Yotongla Pass, situated at an elevation of 3,425 meters (11,236 feet), and descends to Gyetsa village at 2,891 meters (9,484 feet). This section typically takes around 4 to 6 hours to complete. The trail offers a variety of terrains and ecosystems, making it particularly rewarding for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Starting at the high-altitude Yotongla Pass the trail, historically associated with Bhutan's royal family, it descends through open meadows offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The trail then cuts through stretches of open forest, providing shade and a chance to observe local flora and fauna. The final portion of the hike offers a pleasant riverside walk as you approach Gyetsa village. The route also passes through the famous weaving village of Chumey, where our support van will meet us in case we decide to purchase the colorful local yak-hair and wool weavings known as Yathra. We take the 30-minute drive from Chumey or Gyetsa to Mountain Resort, our family lodge opposite the historic Bhutan Foundation-supported Wangduechhoeling Palace and Museum.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Bumthang Mountain Resort

SEPTEMBER 06: WANGDUECHHOELING PALACE MUSEUM / PILGRIM’S ROUTE
Today, we visit the Wangduechhoeling Palace and Museum, designed as a state-of-the-art repository of cultural artefacts for the preservation of the kingdom’s royal heritage, an endeavor supported by the Bhutan Foundation. Then, continue to a string of ancient monasteries from the seventh to the 17th centuries that make a sacred ring around the valley, and enter deep into Bhutan's mythological territory with a curated tour of the temple art, stories, and illustrated exploits and teachings of Bhutan‘s reigning Buddhist patron saints. We end the day at the Swiss inspired Red Panda Brewery, named after the region's, rare and elusive wild life mascot. The café on the grounds of the brewery offers both Swiss-inspired dishes like potato and egg Rosti, and the beloved Bhutanese meat and vegetable dumplings or Momos.

After enjoying the expansive views, take the Trans Bhutan Trail down a steep descent on a rocky, winding trail that enters tall forests of pine and fir and eventually exits at the prayer flag strewn Kikila pass above Jakar for the day ending ride back to the lodge in our support van. A lovely rooftop soak in the hot tubs on a partially exposed upper deck of the lodge is in order tonight.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Bumthang Mountain Resort

SEPTEMBER 08: TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL, JAKAR TO TANG
Today choose one of two trekking routes, the first a difficult and challenging trek from the Jakar Valley center, following the aquamarine Chamkharchhu River to the Ngang Lhakhang, or ‘Swan Temple.’ This ancient royal trail winds through the surrounding villages to a high pass before a dropping down along a spectacularly rolling mountainslope into Tang Ogyen Choling. The other option, which is a shorter route, takes us along the Trans Bhutan Trail proper, winding up a farm road, to rise through tall forests of pine and fir up to a modest pass that drops down to the Pemacholing Nunnery, from where we take our support van to The Ogyen Choling Manor and Museum. Tang Ogyen Choling is an atmospheric old central Bhutanese palace that dates back to ancient regional nobility. This evening, if we’re lucky, we may be able to share a lovely and informative conversation with our hosts Ashi Kunzang Roder, the very well traveled and well-read present-day descendent of an ancient noble family, and her Swiss Forester husband, who has advised and worked for the Bhutanese government’s natural resources services for decades. The retired couple now lives in the old renovated manor and are among the most consummate and storied hosts in all of Bhutan.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Tang Ogyen Choling Manor and Museum

SEPTEMBER 09: OGYENCHOLING VALLEY EXPLORATION
Spend a whole day exploring the charming villages surrounding Ogyencholing, with our local menu of hiking options in and around Ogyen Choling, or simply relax and unwind at the historic old manor to the sweet, slow rhythms of the Bhutanese country life. If we venture out, we will visit the small, local family temples and shrines that dot the valley, each with its own piece of local history, and maybe stop by a local home for a hearty traditional farmers’ meal, featuring ingredients grown on the farm.
This evening, after a delicious dinner prepared from organic ingredients grown on the manor’s garden, we may be treated again to an interesting and wide-ranging conversation with our hosts, Ashi Kunzang and her husband, Dasho Walter, on topics such as history, politics, religion, spirituality, and current affairs.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Tang Ogyen Choling Manor and Museum
SEPTEMBER 10: TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL TO JAKAR

After a hearty breakfast today, we drive to the scenically located Pemacholing Nunnery started by the current reincarnation of the 15th century Buddhist Mystic, Teton Pema Lingpa. From there, we pick up the cross-country trail one final time, winding first through the villages, and gradually ascending to a pine forested path, skirting the edges of the farms and orchards, and finally entering tall forests of fir overhung with fluttering prayer flags before cresting a small pass with a wooden gazebo where we can take a short rest and enjoy our picnic lunch. As we descend, scenic views of the valley open up as we get closer to the regional center at the base of the mountain. Tonight, enjoy another well-deserved soak in the hot-stone baths on the upper terrace at the family lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Bumthang Mountain Resort
SEPTEMBER 11: DOMESTIC FLIGHT TO PARO.

Take an early domestic flight to Paro past dramatic Himalayan snow peaks. Drukair flight KB 011 departs at 11:10 AM and arrives in Paro at 11:45 AM. Browse the colorful shops of Paro and wander the bustling main street, which served for centuries as a main stop for traders and pilgrims on the ancient route to Tibet. Following lunch, we transfer to Olathang Lodge for your check-in at the front desk, and friendly rounds of archery with your trip staff afterwards.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Paro Olathang Lodge

SEPTEMBER 12: TIGER’S NEST / PARO SHOPS
Take an early morning hike to the famous Tiger’s nest monastery, and wander the markets of Paro for people watching, gifts, and souvenirs, or head back to the lodge for another round of archery with the BHE team at the lodge before a lovely Himalayan style, farewell, dinner and reception at an old friend's lovingly restored 300-year-old farmhouse.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Paro Olathang Lodge

SEPTEMBER 13: DEPART FOR DELHI OR BANGKOK

CUSTOM TRIPS

If this trip or schedule doesn't meet your needs, we also arrange private journeys throughout the year with flexible dates.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The activities on this trip are rated as moderate and suits a wide range of interests and physical fitness levels. The hikes on this trip can range from moderate to challenging, depending on your abilities. Trip members should be in good health and comfortable standing or walking for extended periods of time and confident navigating mixed and steep terrain that may include rocky trails, slippery conditions and, or, steps and stairs. Daily activities include city walking tours, hiking to and entering monasteries, temples and fortresses, driving over winding mountain roads and easy to moderate hiking with some strenuous options where possible. The general elevations in the valleys will mostly range from 6,800 ft to 9,000 ft, with drives that will take us over higher passes before descending to the average elevations mentioned above. The final hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery is 10,000 ft.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The high-end accommodations on this journey feature traditional Bhutanese style with modern elements. The lodges are handpicked for regional character, comfort, and hospitality, including our beautiful family lodge in the central highlands of Bhutan, the Mountain Resort (see more on the Mountain Resort below). In peak season, depending on availability, we may use lodges comparable to the ones we have listed or advertised.
EXPEDITION STAFF
Every expedition is curated by expert native-born guides and trip leaders who also facilitate meetings and learning experiences with other locally knowledgeable people along the way. Our experienced team shares valuable insights and local expertise to ensure a culturally rich adventure of discovery through the Himalayan landscape and traditions of Bhutan.

ABOUT CULTURAL EXPEDITIONS

Our cultural expeditions are bespoke itineraries designed for active travelers that combine guided excursions, cultural insights, art and customs, with distinguished accommodations featuring a traditional ambience. Our journeys are small group adventures of usually 8 to 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 guests per group. Unlike most tour providers who think nothing of a single guide leading an entire busload of travelers, we maintain a maximum of 4 guests per Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions guide, not counting support staff. This ensures that our journeys feel more like a shared adventure with local friends than a tourist's jaunt through the countryside.

WHAT TRAVELERS ARE SAYING

“Through the eyes of a select few informed leaders, we saw the dilemmas of a culture: A hitherto sheltered nation discovering the arguments for and against remaining a cloistered society in this 21st Century. I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. Unlike anything else I have ever experienced!”
