These extraordinary caves are filled with Buddha images, of every style and material imaginable. On the way to the Caves, stop at Ban Xang Hai Village (If time permits). The village is open 6.00 am - 15.00 pm and closed every major Buddhist holiday. This traditional Lao village is famous for the production of lao lao, the local alcoholic brew distilled from rice. The village also provides an opportunity to learn how to make traditional Laotian Corn Leaf Paper and Rice Tree Paper. First you learn how the material for corn leaf and rice tree paper are sourced and then prepare the paper from the raw materials provided. Once the paper is dry you will be shown how it can be fashioned into lampshades, a booklet or a postcard. You get to keep what you make as mementos of your visit. Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 4: LUANG PRABANG (BREAKFAST) Sightseeing in Luang Prabang Luang Prabang, the ancient capital city of the Lan Xang Kingdom, is famous for its historic temples and beautiful setting surrounded by mountains. In 1995 it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site. Visit Talat local market (Tour will start early morning) (30 minutes) Visit the National Museum (former Royal Palace) and Wat Mai Visit the National Museum (Royal Palace), a modest but graceful building which combines traditional Lao and French beaux-arts motifs. This turn-of-the century royal residence has been preserved as it was when the royal family last lived here and provides unique insights into the history of Laos. Then, visit the Hor Phrabang, a royal temple built on the palace grounds especially to house Laos' most sacred Buddha statue. The Buddha, cast in gold, silver and bronze alloy, stands at 83 cm tall and weighs about 50 kgs (more than 110lbs). Continue to Wat Mai, which was built in 1821 during the reign of King Manthatourath, and was once the residence of Phra Sangkharaj, the Patriarch of Laos' Buddhist clergy. Excursion to Kuang Si Waterfalls (3 hours) From Luang Prabang, travel by vehicle to the Kuang Si falls. The waterfalls are in a perfect natural setting near Luang Prabang. The multi-tiered falls tumble over limestone formations into a series of turquoise pools. Bring your swim suits and sandals if you'd like to dip your toe or part of your body in a relatively gentle pool. Please exercise caution! During certain times of the year, the falls can be dangerous because of strong torrents and the volume of water rushing downstream. Visit the nearby village of Ban Ou or Ban Na Ouane, before returning to Luang Prabang by vehicle. Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 5: LUANG PRABANG (BREAKFAST - DINNER) Today you have a free morning to enjoy a cozy breakfast for two at an interesting local cafe, relax at the hotel or do some exploring on your own. After exploring the temple environs, you will be introduced to your monk teacher who will take you through a short guided meditation (your guide is on hand to help with the translation.) After clearing your mind through meditation amid the spiritual surroundings, travel by boat and tuk tuk to a local yoga school (optional). After a warm welcome by the instructor, you will be taught some basic yoga aimed at improving mental and physical balance. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 7: VIENTIANE (BREAKFAST) Sightseeing in Vientiane (8 hours) The capital city of Laos, Vientiane, still feels like a sleepy city with a relaxed charm, tree-lined boulevards, beautiful temples and colorful markets. Tour the many highlights of the city, including Pha That Luang, a gleaming golden stupa with a vibrantly painted interior (below) that is perhaps the most important national monument in Laos; Ho Pha Keo, the royal temple, now a museum with beautiful examples of Buddhist sculptures; Wat Si Saket, another built in 1818; Patuxai, a monumental arch inspired by Paris' Arc de Triomphe, but executed with Lao motifs. Stop by the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (COPE) for a reckoning with the awful legacy of American bombs, and the progressive work of the organization rehabilitating those injured by unexploded ordnances. See Wat Si Muang, a gold monument built in 1563. End your day at the Talaat Sao, or the "morning market" (actually open all day), the best place to buy traditional Lao fabrics. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 8: VIENTIANE (BREAKFAST - DINNER) Today you have a chunk of leisure time to explore on your own, try some interesting local restaurants, visit an art gallery or just spend some time reading and relaxing at the hotel. This evening visit the home of a local chef and learn how to cook delicious Lao dishes. Travel to Ban Nong Bone Village, where the Head Chef, Vanpheng, will welcome you to her home and teach your cooking class. Say farewell to Vanpheng and spend the rest of the evening at leisure (or see recommendation below): Recommended Tour: This evening we recommend a stroll along the banks of the Mekong River through Chao Anou Park and the Night Market, observing locals and taking in the views. To answer this question, we meet well-known personalities and local thought leaders familiar with Bhutan’s quest for a harmonious society based on its citizens' happiness. We take a dramatic Himalayan flight from Paro in the west to Bumthang, in central Bhutan, where we visit exquisite temples and monasteries dating to the 8th century to study Vajrayana Buddhist art and cosmology. We learn about Bhutan’s ancient customs and traditions and attend a colorful mask dance festival that provides a vibrant window into the people’s spiritual and communal lives. Returning west via the scenic national highway, we meet interesting everyday Bhutanese people from all walks of life—including farmers, monks, shopkeepers, artists, and artisans—gaining key insights into local culture on long scenic hikes along forested trails while gradually deepening our appreciation for what makes a Bhutanese life environmentally sustainable, spiritually meaningful, and ultimately life-affirming—powerful ingredients to human happiness. We stay at a series of scenic and well-appointed lodges built in the traditional style, enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan landscape, and close our unforgettable journey with a morning trek up to “Tiger’s Nest,” Bhutan’s holy shrine perched on a 2,000-foot sheer cliff! This is an intimately curated journey presented with heartfelt authenticity into a tiny kingdom that offers its striking message of balance, peace, and harmony in a world that can seem poised on the brink of forgetting the core values of our common humanity. If you’re a traveler who seeks to influence world affairs positively and wants to return home from your travels not just with happy memories but with valuable life-lessons you can use in your day-to-day, this is a journey that will stay with you long after the pictures have faded! Day 1: BANGKOK - LUANG PRABANG Flight from Bangkok to Luang Prabang Arrival in Luang Prabang Upon clearing Customs and Immigration, your guide and driver will meet you at the airport and present you with a welcome packet including all necessary documentation and vouchers as well as their contact information and information for local staff, offices and contacts you may need for the duration of your stay. ABOUT TREKKING EXPEDITIONS The activities on this trip are rated as moderate for the cultural portion of the journey and challenging for the trekking part of the trip. Trip members should be in good health and confident hiking mixed and steep terrain that may include rocky trails, slippery conditions and, or steps and stairs. Physical activities include city walking tours, steep hiking to monasteries, temples and fortresses, driving over winding mountain roads and strenuous hiking/trekking during the trek. The general elevations in the valleys will mostly range from 6,800 ft to 9,000 ft, with drives that will take us over higher passes before descending to the average elevations mentioned above. This will help acclimate us for our trek which, following the cultural journey, will take us to much higher elevations, exceeding elevations of 4,937 m/16,200 feet or more. Our cultural expeditions are bespoke itineraries designed for active travelers that combine guided excursions, cultural insights, art and customs, with distinguished accommodations featuring a traditional ambience. Our journeys are small group adventures of usually 8 to 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 guests per group. Unlike most tour providers who think nothing of a single guide leading an entire busload of travelers, we maintain a maximum of 4 guests per Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions guide, not counting support staff. This ensures that our journeys feel more like a shared adventure with local friends than a tourist's jaunt through the countryside. GETTING THERE Fly from your home city to Bangkok, Singapore, New Delhi Kolkata, or Kathmandu (Main Gateway Cities)* Overnight Fly from Gateway City to Paro, Bhutan. IMPORTANT: Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions makes round-trip flight arrangements from the Gateway City of your choice to Bhutan as a courtesy to our travelers. Airfare is not included in trip price. Bhutan’s Wild Wild East: A fascinating temple whose walls preserve a painful history of migration FIELD NOTES December 23, 2022 Pema Choden Tenzin The author (center; head uncovered) with three generations of Brokpa women. © Pema Wangchuk With thoughtful itineraries honed since 1999, we unveil the depths of Bhutan's happiness philosophy, the daily physical adventures through the beautiful Himalayan landscape complemented by the intimate and in-depth cultural experiences sensitively curated for you every day. Questions? Get in touch with us Through the eyes of a select few informed leaders we saw the dilemmas of a culture: A hitherto sheltered nation discovering the arguments for and against remaining a cloistered society in this 21st Century. Now, as I explore the temple’s fascinating interiors, I understand why he asked me that question. For there, painted in vivid colors on the temple walls, is the ancient history of how Kota’s people, the Brokpas, came to Bhutan with their Moses-like matriarch Ama Jomo (for whom they named the temple). It’s a tale of persecution, of loss, and of redemption. Here, a scene describing the atrocities of the cruel King of Tshona—what was then part of southern Tibet—who caused them to flee their home. There, the perilous journey they took across the harsh landscape of deep gorges, snowy mountains, high passes, and freezing rivers. The author takes in the incredible details of the Jomo Doksa Temple wall mural. © Pema Wangchuk The story, as told: There lived a tyrannical king in Tshona, Tibet, who persecuted the [Brokpa] people with the most outrageous demands. The final straw came when he told them to move an entire mountain as it was keeping the sun’s rays from falling on his palace. Worked to near-death conditions at a mad and unrealistic task they could not complete the Brokpas, under the leadership of their matriarch Ama Jomo, decided it would be far easier to kill the king than move the mountain. And that they did: An act of violent regicide depicted graphically today on the Jomo Doksa temple walls. It was to escape the no-doubt harsh punishment waiting for them that Ama Jomo and her people fled south, finally arriving in Bhutan, where they settled down first in Sakteng and then Merak. And so here they remain to this day, Ama Jomo’s people, tending livestock—mostly yak and sheep—as the infertile terrain doesn’t allow for most types of cultivation. Young women in Sakten in their signature handwoven fabrics “Most people know Ama Jomo led our people here, but she had help from Lam Jaropa, our spiritual teacher who also came here with the people,” explains temple caretaker, Chhunku, pointing at a painting on the wall that illustrates how the people lost their way and fell off a cliff into a waterfall. Next to it, a panel that shows how the lama miraculously saved them by levitating them over the cliff. In the matriarchal-leaning, sheep and yak-rearing societies of Sakteng and Merak, women are strong figures within the community, literally and metaphorically. © Pema Wangchuk Promised Land: The rich, ancient cultures of Sakteng and Merak endure within the fragile ecology of the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, protected as the 'home of the yeti' by the Bhutanese government's Nature Conservation Division and Department of Forestry Services. Toward the end of their journey, the Brokpa people first landed in Northeast India’s Tawang region, but the altitude was unsuitable for their yaks. They pressed on, eventually arriving in what’s presently Sakteng valley. “Ama Jomo waved a white cloth in the distant direction of Bhutan, and Lam Jaropa carved paths out of bare rocks as they climbed mountains on their treacherous journey,” my hosts tell me. “Oh, and they also fought lake-dwelling demons that ate people.” As the exiles made a final push towards Merak, the last high pass, Nakchung La, daunted many. Eventually, the older and weaker members of the tribe stayed on and set down roots in Sakteng. “The ones who weren’t strong enough to continue to Merak stayed back,” a Merak resident told me with some ill-concealed pride. “On Fire” The word Merak literally means “set on fire.” Legend has it that when the Brokpas came to Bhutan, the place was first cleared by fire to create their settlement. The houses in Merak today are a tight cluster with barely a muddy pathway between them, a fact that reflects their tight-knit society. The Brokpa language is unique and distinct with regional influences from Kurtoep (the language of eastern Bhutan’s Kurtoe region), Tibetan, and Sharchop (the dominant language in Bhutan’s far-east). Their traditional wear includes colorful weaves and patterns—what we’d describe as “jackets” and “skirts,” for the women, and the heavier sheepskin, leather and yak-hair textiles for the men. A split-frame of a man and woman from the Brokpa culture of eastern Bhutan in traditional attire. © Pema Wangchuk The author and her host at the drinking ceremony. © Pema Wangchuk It's a wild party: The traditional Brokpa wine offering called Tshogchhang Alcohol is an essential part of eastern Bhutanese hospitality but, oh my, the Brokpas sure know how to take it up a notch! If you visit Merak, you’ll be welcomed by a group of locals (mostly women) who’ll prepare a Tshogchhang, or ‘sacred wine of welcome.’ It’s part of a ceremony where the visitor is served alcohol at a gathering attended by the important elders of the community. You’ll see this tradition in various other parts of Bhutan, but believe me, it’s different here in Merak! You first drink three cups representing Gizhab (Respect) Thuenlam (Harmony) and Tsedung (Trust). Refusing any one of the first three cups would be tantamount to an insult. Much colorful singing and dancing ensues in the wake of the three cups of wine as the women keep pouring more alcohol. What happens if you refuse the subsequent pours? Well, then the ladies come and pinch your thighs and run away giggling! In the past, they say, women have even sat on the guests, often to the delight of the male visitors! Despite my initial shock when the serving women held down my cup and literally forced the alcohol on me, I found it all very refreshing. It reminded me how Bhutanese women truly can be uninhibited, funny, and comfortable in their skins. As the night wore on, I grew as red as a tomato, my urbane inability to handle the alcohol an enormous source of amusement to my hosts. “Madam zhey le reb mala mai ” (I see that madam can’t drink all that much) teased Ama Ngaden, my host. The hair on my back rose when she added casually that what I’d witnessed was merely a tamer version of the ceremony they actually inflicted on most other guests. “We don’t care whether you’re a Dasho or a King, we’ll come and sit on you!” she said, laughing. Highlight: Watching the fascinating story of the Brokpa people unfold before me on those incredible temple walls. Disappointment: Jomo Doksa also has an ancient statue of Ama Jomo that’s protected under dense folds of silk khadhar scarves. When I asked to see it, Caretaker Chhunku said, somewhat cryptically: “We don’t allow women [to see the statue],” and they ushered me out as my male team members prepared to catch a glimpse. Inside scoop: the two large trees outside the temple are said to be imbued by the spirits of Ama Jomo and Lam Jaropa. It’s the richly detailed story of an entire people: their trials, their desperation, an exodus from the land of their birth and, finally, peace in a land they probably knew only vaguely then as the “Southern Land of Medicinal Plants” or Lho Menjong.
